Growing as Living Stones in 1 Peter 2 video discussion

The lectionary readings for Easter 5 are 1 Peter 2.2-10 and John 14.1-14.

In 1 Peter 2, we jump back to before last week’s reading (!) in order to line up with discussion about places to abide in John 14. This well-known passage is saturated with OT references, both implicit and explicit, which we need to note.

And it is also full of vivid images—though we have to understand their paradoxical nature to appreciate both their theology and their implications.

The article about the description of Jesus in Revelation 1 is here.

The video discussion of John 14 is here

…and the written commentary is here.

  1. FEEDING on Christ the sincere milk of the Word.
What does feeding on Christ mean? Is it the Eucharist?
God is El Shaddai, first “the Almighty “the strong breasted one”
His “manliness” and His tender “motherliness”
Peter was invited to feed Christ’s sheep rich food rich pastures
and of course, His Lambs, which need milk.
The Question arises “What are you feeding on” that does not fill you?
More importantly what are you feeding your flock on? The husks of the pigs,
Discontentment, complaining, murmuring, false Greek Philosophy [wisdom] strife and division .Pointing out other people’s follies and failings [ a la Starmerisms and Trumpisms]?
An account of our ministry will be required of us.
Or inculcating Jewish wisdom, personified as a nurturing woman and she was as Christ who is “made unto us wisdom”.
OR The desire of Christ, to edify, to perfect, [bring to fullness, completion, maturity] in a word, to full satisfaction and contentment and rest beside still waters and luxurious pastures?
Feeding on Christ by faith, in their hearts.
Why are churches scattered and dying, is it that there is no meat in His House?
Let the dead bury their dead, feed My sheep. Shalom.

  2. People created from dust becoming fabulous gems in Christ
Formed from dust; Transformed into precious living stones !
Malachi 3:17 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
In the city of New Jerusalem these precious
materials become a builded city for the fulfillment of God’s eternal purpose, which is to have a corporate expression.

  3. On the “pure spiritual milk” in v2, I had the Vulgate in parallel in the STEP bible (plug) which reads:

sicut modo geniti infantes rationale sine dolo lac concupiscite ut in eo crescatis in salutem

Pasting the whole of this into Google translate gives something similar to the KJV:

As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby unto salvation.

but removing the first phrase, it gives:

Desire the pure milk of reason, that by it you may grow unto salvation.

  4. A side note on English translations (not) linking words, in John 14/15 perhaps for monē/menõ rather than “dwelling place”/”remain” they should use “abode”/”abide”.

    • Precisely. The thought has been had before, and I still think it can’t be improved upon.

In modern Greece a MONE is a monastery. Not a mansion as KJV, though I don’t know what ‘mansion’ meant in 1611.

  5. A former pastor who had a Masters on John, pressed the point that in the context ‘rooms’ represent believers.
House as in household (of people).
Jesus left the ‘palace’ that he might bring his people to dwell with him. Mansion would seem to be too poky in comparison.
We are his inheritance: he is ours. A mutual indwelling, in union.
Bring it on, but maybe not quite yet.
