Giving an account of our hope in 1 Peter 3 video discussion

The lectionary readings for Easter 6 in Year A are 1 Peter 3.13-end and John 14.15-21.

The reading from 1 Peter 3 includes well-known and practical advice on how to ‘give an account of the hope that is in you’ which has obvious application today.

But the second half includes what is perhaps the most obscure verse in the New Testament! Come and explore with us the meaning of this, and the connection between the two sections.

The video discussion of John 14.15–21 can be found here,

and the written commentary here.

  1. In the Ways of God is suffering a good or bad thing?
    In Christ suffering seems educational “Yet learned he obedience through the things which he suffered”Heb.5 v 8.
    The disposition of obedience Jesus possessed before He suffered, but the proof that this disposition existed must be shown in deed; this progress from the disposition to the deed of obedience is a practical learning of the virtue of obedience” (Lünemann
    For us chastening and afflictions are part of parental improvement.
    From the beginning suffering was educational, to cover their shame God provided Skins – grace. An animal (maybe a lamb?) had to be slain, even pre-ordained/preprepared to provide a covering?
    This might well explain why Able offered an acceptable sacrifice to God because of God’s sacrifice. As well as our presentation of our own lives to God as a living sacrifice as a thank offering. Or as the Psalmist says “Shall I offer unto God that which costs me nothing?”

  2. I am reminded of the Ways that God leads His people and for what purpose.
    PS.66:12 Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.
    66:9 Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved.
    66:10 For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.
    66:11 Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins.
    The Holy Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness…. Mark 1:12–13;
    Jesus left us an example “1 Pet 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps
    66:10 For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.
    66:11 Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins.
    Gor tries our “metal”
    The Holy Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness…. Mark 1:12–13;
    ISA.43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
    Deut 32:10 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.
    John 16:33 “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world “.
    If one is indeed Led of God and led of the Spirit all things work together for good tp those who love God AND are called according to His purposes.
