The lectionary epistle for Trinity 15 in Year A is Romans 14.1–12, and it follows on from our reading last week, offering further practical working out of Paul’s theology expressing our security found in God.
But there is a fascinating turn. Where, on other issues, Paul is at great pains to teach the truth and ensure that everyone agrees, here he explores areas where we can agree to disagree—and distinguishing the two is vitally important. Paul tells us that we do not need to divide on secondary issues, because our security is found in our trust in God. We do not need to correct everyone else on every issue! It is a vital lesson both in our age of social media conflict and in our debates within the church.
The gospel reading is Matthew 18.21-35, and you can find written commentary on that here, and video discussion here.
