The parable of the unjust steward in Luke 16 video discussion

The Sunday lectionary gospel reading for Trinity 14 in Year C is Luke 16.1–13, the so-called Parable of the Unjust Steward (or ‘Dishonest Manager’). For various reasons, it is one of the most intriguing and challenging parables of Jesus to interpret, though popular readings commonly pass over the problems with it.

James and Ian discuss the challenging issues, and explore how we might read and preach on this passage.

  1. For me, it’s always easier and more enjoyable to discuss Jesus’ stories and teachings than to do what he calls us to do: to use mammon, money, resources—to give away what does not ultimately belong to us. In addition, it’s a struggle to believe that what we do with what we have actually has something to do with our eternal future even though that’s what Jesus clearly teaches (or at least implies).
